Know your equipment!

In a previous life, I ran a production facility that catered to a very cyclical market and we always struggled with our production schedule. In one production meeting, my General Manager asked me about a particular part of the process and its capability. This equipment was always underutilized and therefore, did not get the attention that some of our other "bottlenecks" received. I did not know the answer off the top of my head and he gave me sage advice; young man, you should always "Know Your Equipment".

When I perform Vibration Training now, this is one of those catch phrases that I tell everyone that they should remember even if they forget everything else I present in my classes.

When performing Vibration Analysis, you have to know your equipment! When you set up your analysis parameters, you need to understand the type of equipment you are analyzing and its typical fault modes. If not, you could miss an important fault identifier that you do not capture. You might get lucky just taking a "default" measurement but leaving it to luck may not be the best planning method.
